Alex and Daniel said “I do” in beautiful California on October 2, 2015 at Casino San Clemente. They were surrounded by family and friends
It didn’t take me long to discover that Danny LOVES to travel! He has this fantastic world map in our house with little pins on it that show all of the countries he’s visited in his life. Looking at the number of pins strewn across the map I realized how many excuses I had made about travelling. Or I should say, NOT travelling. It also excited me realizing how much catching up I had to do! To put things into perspective, when we first started dating I had visited 2 countries outside of the United States. Two. Danny had been to twenty-one countries. Yes, you read that right. Twenty-one!
So where did we go for our first trip? Mexico! And we had an absolute BLAST! I was hooked and within weeks we started planning our next trip. We decided to take a 21 day journey and visit Turkey, Greece, and Italy.
And God I loved every minute of it. Greece, specifically, holds a special place in my heart.
We arrived in Athens by plane and took a taxi to our hotel. When we arrived at our room we set our belongings down and walked out to the balcony. I stood transfixed. We had a balcony view of The Acropolis. It was stunning and I immediately fell in love with the city. We spent the next day and a half exploring ancient ruins and museums. We then packed up and headed to the port in Piraeus to catch a high speed ferry to Santorini, Greece.
The boat ride was easy and we arrived in Santorini within a few hours. We rented a car, dropped our bags off at our hotel, and started exploring the island. It is a gorgeous location speckled with white buildings capped with amazing blue dome roof tops. The people are generous and kind, the beaches are an incredible blue, and the views are just breathtaking.
The only thing that wasn’t perfect was that I had not been feeling well. Even so, Danny had been a wonderful sport about it. On May 20th I felt a lot better and Danny asked me if I wanted to go to dinner. I immediately said yes and he told me he had found this great little restaurant called Archipelagos. We got ready and began the short walk from our hotel to the restaurant. The restaurant was at the top of Fira, nestled along the cliff face. We were seated on the open terrace with a view of the Aegean Sea and Nea Kameni (a small volcanic island a short boat ride from Santorini). Danny had been talking for days about getting a time-lapse of the sunset in Santorini, so he brought his GoPro and set it up on the table next to us. We sat staring at the sun as it set and Danny came over and sat next to me. I grabbed his hand and, as I looked out at the oranges and pinks that littered the sky, I suddenly realized something. Danny’s hand was sweaty. Danny’s hands were never sweaty.
I looked at him and asked him why his hands were sweaty. I noticed he was nervous, holding a small, shiny object in his hand. Danny then got down on one knee, asking me to be his wife! He later told me he had gone to the Archipelagos before and knew this was where he wanted to propose. He had planned to video tape our proposal with the GoPro, so he had been telling me that he wanted to time-lapse the view for a while so I wouldn’t be suspicious. It was absolutely perfect!
