Suyen and Sean got married on August 20, 2015 in New York in an intimate wedding that coordinated touches of coral and gray with sprinkles of gold. We received this submission from one of Suyen’s bridesmaids, Tiehesha, who wanted to surprise her with this post. Suyen follows The Coordinated Bride on Instagram. Surprise Suyen!!! Congratulations – You’ve been featured!!
7 Years in the Making
Sean and I met in November of 2007 at the Riverdale Nursing Home in Bronx, New York. I was working as a receptionist and he worked in the housekeeping department. I remember I was at work one Saturday morning and this guy who looked like he was a member of the Nation of Islam approached me asking if he could take me to lunch and maybe dinner. I said no, but he pressed on for my number, so I told him that I would take his.
I hate to say this, but I was bored at work one day and decided to text him…lol. A text that would later change my life. From that moment on we texted back and forth getting to know each other then finally around Thanksgiving weekend we went on a first date to the movies. We dated for a while until February 2008 when we officially took the relationship to an exclusive status.
I’m not tooting my horn, but it was love at first sight for Sean (toot, toot). Two weeks after making our relationship official, we flew to Jamaica W.I. for my cousin’s funeral and he proposed. Emotions were flying high, especially due to the nature of the trip, but I honestly did not take him seriously because he didn’t have a ring. But I still said YES!
In March of 2009 Sean, my one-year-old daughter at the time, and I were out shopping in Cross County Shopping Mall, in New York. We were in the parking lot heading back to the car when out of nowhere he was on bended knee and proposed again, but this time with a ring. I was so shocked, I honestly didn’t’ see the proposal coming and with my daughter with us made it even more memorable for me.
Our Wedding Planning
I always knew that I wanted an intimate, romantic wedding. In addition to my regular 9-5, I also do event planning in my spare time. After creating memorable moments for birthday parties, christenings etc., it was now time for me to envision and create the wedding that I have always dreamed of with lots of coral, grey and maybe a hint of fuchsia or gold. It was time to get in full planning mode as the bride/event planner.
I was ecstatic that after being engaged for almost 7 years that I was finally going to marry my best friend. A man who loves my children as if they were his very own and to walk down the aisle to finally make it official that they are his own. But I cannot lie; the stress was definitely real. Playing both roles as the event planner and the blushing bride definitely took it’s toll on me. There were times where I felt as if Sean lacked interest in the planning. I questioned if I chose the right bridesmaids/maid of honors even though they are like my sisters and we have known each other since forever.
I think a part of me was turning into “bridezilla” but if I had to do it all over again, the only thing I would possibly change is having a smaller bridal party. These girls were difficult to get on the same page….lol….but I love them.
Advice to my fellow Coordinated Brides?
My advice to future brides is simple: go with what truly makes you happy. I went through soo many obstacles planning my wedding because I kept listening to the opinions of other people instead of putting my feelings and creative ideas at the forefront. But in the end, it was pure satisfaction, as I became Mrs. Fenty!
